This reduces the amount of heat the engine is producing, pumps air through the other two cylinders, and gets the driver's attention for sure. I think you experienced that stage. In the third stage the engine is shut down.

I recommend you handle this as a sudden overheating problem. Get the cause identified and fixed, and see how things stand. The odds are probably in your favor. Don't worry about the EGR codes for now - they don't have anything to do with this.

I Have A 1993, 4 Cylinder, Automatic, Toyota Camry. Recently I Had A Friend Of Mine Replace The Head Gasket Because It Blew.
