I Have A 1997 Toyota Camry That Has An Ongoing Exhaust System Problem. First, The Exhaust Manifold Has Been Running Real Hot For A While Now - I Mean Red Hot Like It Just Came Out Of The Furnace. I Took The Car For A Smog Test Last Month And It Passed With Flying Colors. Temperature Gauge Shows Normal - Always Just A Tad Above The Middle. Car Does Not Overheat Or Lose Power, But It Water Hose And The Radiator Indicates Above Normal Pressure. If You Touch The Hose After Driving The Car For A Few Minutes, You Can Feel The Boiling Water Inside The Hose. Engine Runs Smooth And Quiet However. I Had It Check For Crack Head Gasket And Result Was Negative. Two Days Ago The Engine Check Light Came On. I Bought An Obd Ii Reader And Reader Shows Error Code P0401 (Gas Recirculation - Insufficient Exhaust Flow). I Need Help Figuring Out What'S Is The Likely Culprit So I Can Decide Whether To Fix It Myself Or Take It To A Mechanic. In Case I Take It To A Mechanic, At Least I Know What The Problem Is So I Won'T Get Taken. Thanks For All Your Help.

While the EGR system helps cool cylinder temperatures, I DOUBT that this is causing a hot manifold or high cooling system pressures... These two things should be checked by a shop... Hot manifold could be a fuel control problem of some sort, high cooling system pressure could indicate a combustion leak of the head gasket ( see if the coolant smells like exhaust fumes)

Hot manifold *could* also indicate a clogged catalytic converter, does the car run sluggish at all, or not want to accelerate well?

Well you left us with many choices....The 4 runner came out in 84...These were straight axle front end and a convertible top...They only came with a 4 banger with a carburetor...In 85 you had the same truck but fuel injection was an option....These are the most sought after of all the 4 runners...They are easy to lift,they are fuel injected with gas saving 4 cylinder engines with removable top....86 they went to independent front suspension...Still same body style......89 we had major changes.....Hardtop only and they came with their all new v6 motor....These were junk and were prone to head gasket and head failures....Their were many recalls for this engine....They really didn,t get the problem solved until the mid 90.s...95 they came out with their all new v6...More power,a little less fuel mileage but a great little motor....So thats the story of the 4 runner...Me i,d go with the flow and get a 85 fuel injected 4 runner...Sure you,ll have to look around for a while and probably pay a little more money but the resale on the truck we always be good...You,ll have your snow truck then in the summer you can take the top off and go camping and 4 Wheeling in style...Parts are cheap and gas mil age is good...You can,t go wrong with an efi 85 runner!!!

The State of California will allow Income Eligible applicants the opportunity to register their vehicles through the DMV and receive registration tags/stickers for two consecutive years, WITHOUT passing the smog inspection.
