On any major repair I recommend that you get 3 or 4 estimates from local service facilities unless you are lucky enough to have a shop with an absolutely stellar reputation available. Compare the estimates and choose one of the middle estimates. My reasoning for this is the low estimate either left something out or worse is deliberately giving a low ball estimate to get you in and then when your car is all torn apart they find all sorts of critically important things wrong with it which run your bill through the roof. Do the leg work and be an informed car owner. No reliable technician or shop will give an estimate for repair site unseen except as a budgetary estimate which will be a range from the middle average to the unusual high end possible.

First off you can not fix it. 1 you do not have the equipment. 2 You do not have the skills or licenses in some states to work on smog devices. But, It would be nice if you had a friend that was a certified mechanic at this point in time. Some of the smog parts are very expensive so you do not want any one just guessing at the problems. Here is the problem with smog failures. You could have just one pat causing all those failures. or you may have 5 parts causing them. But, it will take a qualified mechanic with several thousands of dollars in tools and equipment to isolate all the actual faulty parts in the system. Shop around and ask around town for who the smog guru is. Especially if you can find one in a chevy dealership. He just may be doing work on the side in the evenings at his home garage for half the price of what the dealership is getting.

It can be very physically strenuous. You will need to be able to lift 50-75 lbs at least. Most mechanics are also not lucky enough to start out in a nice enclosed establishment and are working in harsh weather some months of the year. Also you will most likley be starting out in a shop as an oil changer or tire buster. You will be rated on your speed and attention to detail. As you prove capable you will be trysted with larger tasks.
For best results you should attend a trade school especially if you have no or limited knowledge of cars. Remeber, just replacing a part doesn't make you a mechanic. A thorough knowledge of what your replacing and what made it fail is important to prevent repeat failures.
It can be a very frustrating business. You will be constantly learning and updating your education to keep up with the changes in the industry.
People will be irate that there car broke and it so expensive to fix, so of course it is your fault.
It is also a rewarding career. Good technicians are a rare commodity today and truly good ones can find work anywhere, anytime. You will save money on your own repairs and suddenly will become very important to your family and friends (when there car breaks down) "Side Jobs" can be a signifigant source of extra income.
