Definitely look for coupons in your area for CA smog check. It depends what the lowest shop in your area wants to charge.
Once you find the lowest, just ask the mechanic where is a cheap place they suggest for the other checks you need.

Paying more for smog check does not get you any additional benefit, so just find the lowest price.

It is not the same as car maintenance, where paying more typically means you're getting a more competent shop with better mechanics who will perform the work more correctly.

Help! Private Party Faked Passing Smog Test?
I Recently Bought A Car That Passed The Smog Test With The Previous Owner(I Have The Smog Test Certificate), But After A Week Of Driving, The Engine Light Came On And Error Code P0440 Evap System Malfunction Came Up. I Have Not Redone Another Smog Check But I Know This Error Code Will Surely Make The Car Fail In Smog Test. I Don'T Know How They Masked It So That They Were Able To Pass The Smog Test. By California Law, Used Car Sellers Are Supposed To Repair The Car So That It Is Able To Pass The Smog Test Before Selling It. I'M Going To Have The Car Go Through The Smog Test Again And If It Does Fail, Please Give Me Advice On What Legal Action I Can Take.

If you have a valid smog certificate in your hands you don't need to go through the test again. The status of the car today is 100% irrelevant as long as you have a valid smog certificate in your hands that you can produce for the DMV.

All you need to do is present the certificate to the DMV for your registration and tags, pay your fees and get that car registered.

Of course none of that takes care of the real issue and that is the car needs to be repaired, but as far as the smog test and the registration and the DMV are concerned, as long as you have that valid certificate you are good to go.

If the Check Engine Light is ON the car will not pass the smog test. But that doesn't mean you were scammed. You bought a used car and used cars break down all the time at unexpected moments. Just because the CEL is ON doesn't mean they misrepresented the car or tried to intentionally mislead you. It might just means it's an old car.
