Is This Domestic Violence?
I Was Recently Charged With Domestic Violence. My Girlfriend And I Were Arguing And She Was Going To Leave. I Threw A Phone To Her, And Told Her To Call The Cops. She Called The Cops Because Of The Argument And Not Wanting Things To Get Out Of Hand. The Cops Came And Arrested Me. The Phone Didn'T Hurt Her And She Didn'T Have Any Marks From It. I Know Domestic Violence Is A Serious Crime But What I Did Wasn'T Domestic Violence At Least In My Option. Also She Said She Would Try To Get The Charge Dropped, However The Sate Will Press Charges Anyway. Do I Have A Good Chance Of Getting This Dismissed?

You need to talk to a lawyer. Your opinion of what is domestic violence and what the law says it is may be completely different. Also, your girlfriend may have more resources than you for this kind of thing. There are all kinds of programs for women in this situation and not nearly as many for men.

Protect yourself.

Civil Engineer Needs Law Career Advice?
I'M An Undergrad At Georgia Tech And I'M Getting My Bachelor'S Degree In Civil Engineering. What Law Career Can I Go Into With This Degree? And Then Which Law School Would Be Best Suited For That Specialization? Is This A Lucrative Career? If You Post Your Sources That Would Be Most Helpful. Best Answer Will Be Rewarded. Thanks In Advanced! Example: If Construction Law Is The Way To Go, What Law School Should I Apply To (What Are The Top 10)

Rest assured, a law school that accepts you as a student won't be accepting you into their Construction Law Program or their Environmental Law Program or their Criminal Law Program. You may, however, have a background that would give you a leg up on other attorneys specializing in areas that relate to your undergrad degree--perhaps construction, if that's your focus, or environmental or land use. That said, if your passion were bankruptcy, no one's saying you couldn't go in that direction, regardless of your undergraduate major. (And your background might come more into play if you had several years of job experience to back up your degree rather than coming directly out of undergrad.)

Other thoughts on this subject: Going to a great law school (Yale, Harvard, Stanford, Berkeley, Pennsylvania, Columbia, Chicago, New York, Michigan-Ann Arbor, etc.) is going to do more for you than going to a school that specializes in (or says it specializes in) construction only. And think about national names vs. local, vis a vis where you plan to practice.

Another thing to consider: Construction law, right now, is going to be really slow (I'm guessing). Construction and real estate just aren't big business the way they were three-five years ago. (In fact, they are dead!) On the other hand, you wouldn't be graduating from law school for another four years, at least, but the big-picture job availability is of course important. The legal field in general is looking pretty strained right now, so that's something else you should consider. Do you love the law, or do you love construction and engineering?

Good luck with your decision!

I Seeing A Divorce Attorney This Morning For A Consultation?
Do I Fill Her In On All The &Quot;Bad Stuff&Quot; That My Ex Could Use Against Me So He Can'T Have It As Ammo? Also, What Should I Expect From This Consultation? What All Does She Need To Know.

As a divorce lawyer, I always want to know everything good or bad and even if it is not totally true, I really need to know what the other side will say about you. To be honest, the bad stuff is rarely as bad as people think and it is always better to be informed than to be surprised. If you think your spouse has seen an attorney, let your layer know that as well.

Bring every bit of financial information you can find. Pay stubs and tax returns are vital. The attorney needs to know what you will be interested in fighting for and what you care about Try not to get bogged down in who gets the toaster, but think about the house, the retirement funds, the cars and the big stuff. Bring information about your debts as well. Organized is better if possible

If you have kids, that should be the focus. Begin to think about parenting time and decision making. Also think about who may be able to testify about your parenting and that of your spouse.

You also need to be ready to ask about the lawyer's qualifications and whether this is the right one for you. Does he specialize in family law? How often does she practice in the Court you will file in? Does he settle more cases or try more? What experts does he expect to use? Does she return phone calls? Also ask about billing and costs, as these cases can get expensive.

Your divorce lawyer will end up knowing more about you than your mother, so you need to be very comfortable with him or her. If not, look for another one. Good luck, this is always hard.

Child Custody W/O Attorney?
I Have Court Hearing Tomorrow Morning For Custody Of My 11Month Old Daughter. I Couldnt Afford An Attorney So Iam Going To Represent Myself. Iam Very Nervous..Any Advise Please???? This Is The Thing Or Court Date Was Set For July 2011 But He, My Babys Father Went To The Court House And Asked For An Emergency Hearing So Now We Have The Hearing On Friday And We Have Not Even Gone To A Mediator..What Do You Think Will Happen??? I Really Wanted To See A Mediator Before We Speak To A Judge! Any Advise???..We Wouldnt Of Been Going Through This If He Were Mature Enough And And Respected Our Verbal Agreement.

If you BOTH agree to a mediator, then that is a possibility. A lawyer won't be granted to you in a civil matter. The child will be granted a lawyer. (a guardian-lit em) to look out for the child's best interests. If the judge granted the emergency hearing, there must be something a little out of whack. Your best best is going through the mediator and working something out with the child's father. Judges can be harsh.
